Downloading Music, Movies and File Sharing

File sharing, also known as P2P (Point-to-Point or Peer-to-Peer), activities such as downloading music, movies, or software from another Internet connected computer (other than the manufacturer's computer) is often a violation of copyright laws and makes you prone to more computer-related and security problems.

It's common that the software used for file sharing, like the popular KaZaa software, to have adware and/or spyware attached to it. Which means, when a user downloads and installs the file sharing software, they are also installing ad-serving software and software that may be collecting and distributing personal information. See our Adware & Spyware page details. Beyond the risk of installing the software, is the risk you take by using the software. P2P activities increases the risk of computer viruses and hackers getting into your computer.

Many of the files being shared (downloaded) are copyrighted works and are illegal to distribute without permission. You can be sued and taken to court by the owner of the copyrighted material. If music, movies, or software are being downloaded to and from your computer by yourself or others through a P2P program, that means you are activelydistributingit!

CTC Net must act in full accordance of Public Law No. 105-304, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, in situations where we receive a copyright complaint. This could result in suspension of your Internet service pending the removal of the copyrighted material from your computer. Click here for more information on copyright laws.

*** Participating in file sharing activity is inviting trouble. ***
