  • How do I upload files to my free space?

The instructions and screen shots below are from the FTP program WS_FTP LE.  Use the instructions below to incorporate the appropriate settings into the FTP software you are using.

    FTP settings

    1. The first step is to establish a connection to the Internet! (We can't stress this one enough!)
    2. Open your FTP program. If you do not have an FTP Program, WS_FTP LE is available here.
    3. Use the following screen shots as reference to type in your settings. The Host Name/Address must be as shown below. If your username does not appear in the User ID field, type it in. Type the password that was assigned with your username in the Password field then click the box in front of Save Pwd.

    4. Click the Startup tab. In the Initial Remote Host Directory field type public_html. This is very important! Your web pages will not work if you do not include this directory.
    5. Click OK. This will connect you to the web server where you will upload your files to.

    6. Once you are connected, the FTP window will be divided in two. The Local System is the files on your computer and the Remote System is our web server. Click to highlight the files on your computer (the Local System) that you want to upload to the web server. Then click on the arrow that points to the Remote System to upload the files.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your initial web site file MUST be named index.html. This means that the first page that people will see must be saved as: index.html (all lowercase letters).

    7. To access your new web site use the following format in your web browser: http://www.chibardun.net/~username Remember to replace the word username with your personal username/Login ID.
    8. To view specific files, use the following format in your web browser: http://www.chibardun.net/~username/filename Remember to replace the word username with your username.  Example: If you upload a picture file named toycar.gif the URL to view that picture is http://www.chibardun.net/~your_username/toycar.gif

    Troubleshooting:

If you can't view your web site, make sure that the file for the first page of your site is named index.html (all lowercase letters). Also, all files must be in the public_html folder.

HTML is case sensitive. This means that if your file is called: Picture.jpg, your URL must be typed exactly the same way. Many people store all of their files in lower case letters to make things easier to remember.

Make sure your picture files end with either .jpg or .gif to be viewable on the Internet.

  • What is my URL or web address?

Your URL (web address) is www.chibardun.net/~username. Replace the word username with your CTC Net username.

If you would like your own .com .net, .org., etc. address; it involves registering a domain name and there are additional charges associated with hosting a domain. See How do I register a domain name? under the Domain FAQs for more information.
