John's Ship in Light Bulb model of "Endurance" won a Gold

John's Static Display model of the Brigantine "Newsboy"
won both a Gold Award and the Dana McCallip Award for the Best Miniature
in the Competition.
John also gave a presentation on the construction of
this model, including a digital slide show of many of the photographs taken
during construction, as part of the Modeler's Symposium during the competition.
In early May of 2000 John was contacted by Cindy Wilson of "The Deep End" production company, with a request to rent several of his models for use in producing a movie. A deal was struck, and three of John's models were used to decorate the set of the movie "The Deep End" during filming. One of the characters in the movie is a retired Navy Admiral who's hobby is building ship in bottle models.
This is a photograph of one of the stars of "The Deep End", Peter Donat, at his desk working on his latest model. At the left, back edge of the desk is one of John's Challenge models. Directly below the lamp is one of John's America in light bulb models. One of John's James Miller models is at the bottom, right corner of the photograph. The model the actor is working on is actually one of John's Sea Bird Yawl models during an early construction phase.
